A key word here for me is 'integrate'. The author describes her situational depression coming on as intense confusion at difficult times in her life, a state that I know feels like being stuck, and when we're stuck there are too many forces pulling on us at once, we're too differentiated. Integration of these difficult experiences is key to overcoming, in the author's words, its debilitating grip.
